Sea Glass Beach on Kauai: What To Know Before You Visit

A glassy surprise

Sea Glass Beach + SaltWaterVibes

Sea Glass Beach is located on the South Shore of Kauai, about 10 minutes from Salt Pond Beach, and it is seriously one of the most unique beaches I’ve ever been to.

Instead of soft golden sand, the shoreline is covered in tiny pieces of sea glass. Everywhere you look there are little colorful pieces mixed into the beach and it almost doesn’t feel real at first.

Sea glass is created from broken bottles, flasks, windshields, and basically anything glass. Over time, the movement of the ocean smooths everything out and gives it this frosted finish. It’s honestly amazing to see in person.

What to Expect

This beach is definitely more for spectating than swimming.

It’s very rocky, and the water itself does not look super inviting. I mostly just walked up and down the shoreline looking at all the glass, shells, and tiny treasures mixed into the sand.

Most of the sea glass pieces are pretty small at this point, but every now and then you’ll spot a bigger one that really stands out. The beach is always changing too, since new pieces continue washing ashore.

And honestly? Half the fun is just slowly walking around seeing what colors and shapes you can find.

The Best Part 🦭

The best part of this beach was seeing this guy! A Monk Seal!

This was the second monk seal I had ever seen in Hawaii, but the first one I had seen relaxing on a beach. He just laid there letting the water roll up and cool him off, wiggling around every now and then without a care in the world.

It was such a cool moment.

Please remember:

  • It is illegal to touch monk seals

  • Always give them plenty of space

  • Stay at least 100 feet away

  • Never disturb or feed them

These animals are protected and incredibly special to Hawaii.

how to get here

Driving east on the main highway from Waimea, you will run into Port Allen Airport. It is just down the road from there. There is a parking lot right in front of the beach.

warning

The conditions at Sea Glass Beach are not for swimming. This beach is great for spectating but please refrain from getting into the water as the strong currents can take you away easily. Also, becuase this beach is popular for Monk Seal sightings please be aware at all times. These animals can be agressive if you get close so please stay at lest 100 feet away.

Why We Loved It

Sea Glass Beach is not your typical Hawaii beach experience—and that’s exactly why I loved it.

It’s quirky, colorful, peaceful, and feels a little unexpected compared to the postcard-perfect beaches people usually picture when they think of Kauai.

Sometimes the most memorable places are the ones that are a little imperfect.

And this one definitely stuck with me 💙
