Ali'i Saltwater Pool

ocean side pool

If one thing Big Island delivers on its epic ocean side pools. From Tidepools, Hot Ponds, and beach side pools there is an amazing experience around every corner. The Ali'i Saltwater pool is located on Kona Side of the Big Island. It is filled by the tide of the ocean making it a real saltwater pool.

The beach and parking is open from 7 am until 9 pm. There is only four slots though, it is a super small parking lot! There is not many places to park around the area either because they are condos and hotels. We decided to just wait and got a spot within 10 minutes! We noticed people come and go often so you shouldn't have an issue.

Depending on the time of year and day the tide can spill over to the pool making it more or less full. We went on an extremely low tide day so the water wasn't as inviting. I would advise going as early as possible to get a spot and fresh water.

The Ali'i Saltwater Pool over looks the beautiful coast in Kona. There truly is not a better location for this ocean tidepool. I do not recommend venturing out of the pool because the surrounding ocean is very rocky and the current can be very rough. There are must better beaches here like Two Steep - where you can even swim with Dolphins!

I of course tested the water and got my feet wet and the water felt great. Be sure to bring goggles becuase I saw a few fish hanging out! Seeing fish is my favorite thing about ocean pools and tidepools!

Where is your favorite tidepool?

how to get here

To get here use the address above as it can be a little tricky to find. Once on Ali'i Drive look for a small parking lot and public beach access signs. You will walk down the beach access and be led right to the saltwater pool.

warning

If the waves are crashing over the walls of the Ali'i Saltwater Pool please refrain from swimming or use extreme caution. If water looks discolored do not swim. Always lock your car and do not leave any valuables in plain sight.
